"Sorry," she said when she got to his table.

"I ordered you a coffee," he said. "What did you find?"

Kelsey chuckled.

"I can see the look in your eye, and there was no reason for you to be late unless you were onto something," John added.

"We are definitely done with Arnold Sanchez?" Kelsey asked.

"Unless multiple people are covering for him. Virginia White confirms she was with him when Becky Samson was murdered, and when Cecily Brown died, he was in Mexico with a couple of friends. No doubt trying to bag himself a Mexican kid at the beach. We’ve tracked down the ticket sale for Becky Samson to take the bus to Winchburgh, and CCTV shows her getting on the bus. We can track her all the way to Fargo, but she would have taken local buses from there or maybe hitched a ride. We have her in Fargo five days before she was murdered."

"I don’t think it will turn up anything, but speak to someone at the bus station and see if they saw her or if someone else was with her."

"You don’t sound confident," John said.

"I’m not. I have a feeling she made it into town, and that’s when our killer picked her up. Keep talking to people. Someone might have seen something."

Kelsey took a moment. John was a man of principles, and while it disgusted Kelsey, too, it really got to John that an adult had a relationship with a minor. Maybe it was because he had a little girl, and she might have to deal with stuff like that in the future. Maybe it was all the young women being murdered. One serial killer and possibly another, and they both targeted women. That wasn’t something that normally happened in this area, but his daughter would grow up in a place where it had.

There would be time to explore that more on the drive home. For now, she had to show him what she had found. If Arnold Sanchez was a dead end, this was the next lead they would follow.

Kelsey sat down and took a sip of coffee before she pulled out the files. She took a bite of one of the apple pies on the plate in the center of the table when her stomach rumbled and started riffling through them.

"This is Mrs. Samson’s statement, right?"

"Yeah," John confirmed.

"She doesn’t mention it here, but do you remember when we spoke to her, and she told us both her parents died not long after she was born?" Kelsey asked.

"Yeah, I think so." John took a drink of his coffee.

"Well, Arnold Sanchez said something last night that didn’t register until this morning. He spoke about being a father figure for Cecily."

"Yeah, I remember that," John admitted.

"And Cecily’s mother had gone through the same thing—mentioned that the mother had a father absent from her life and some other stuff about the family. So, it got me thinking about that, and I made some calls while walking over here. Do you want to know what I found?"

"Hit me with it," John said.
